The most successful homestay programme now in its 4th year. This is an intensive course with 2 to 8 students, (up to 4 of the same nationality) staying with a host family which is qualified to offer tuition and an activity programme. ENGLISH FAMILY AND ENGLISH CULTURE The Top Class host families all live in spacious houses with room to accomodate up to six students. They have a people-carrier or two cars which ensures transport for sports activities and visits. In order to facilitate communication between the students, their friends and family, most host families allow their visitors the use of a computer. Top Class for 12 to 19 year olds
The students are encouraged to take part in all aspects of family life with the hosts and their children, which ensures that the students speak English most of the day.
Top Class participants do not come to school everyday; they receive lessons in the teacher’s home. The families do not necessarily live in Cooden itself but in the small towns and villages nearby and in the neighbouring county of Kent or Sussex.
The home teacher decides on the student’s level and individuals needs, following a school assessment test. Each teacher receives materials chosen by Cooden College; course book, workbook which is kept by the student, teacher’s manual and audio CDs.
Our Teacher Co-ordinator keeps in touch with each Top Class teacher to ensure the correct use of the materials; the teachers can also use supplementary books to complement the course.
We organise days out to London or Brighton, so that all our Top Class students can be together. Other activities are organised by the host family.
Naturally, these suggestions are interpreted by mutual discussion between the English hosts and the students themselves.
The Top Class students are based in the family but they have contact with Cooden College through the Course Co-ordinator who meets and liaises with students and hosts to ensure their well-being and progress.
